Ronald C. Berg

Berg
Ronald Clair Berg, age 77, died Jan. 22, 2021, after a post-surgery infection. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Williams Dingmann Funeral Home, St. Cloud.
Ronald was born Sept. 20th, 1943, to the late Donald and Kathryn (Ries) Berg in Storm Lake, Iowa. He graduated from Storm Lake High School and went to business school in Omaha, Nebraska, and Sioux City, Iowa. There, he met and wed Grayce Van Gorp May 3, 1963. To this union came two children: Kimberly Ann and David Mark.
Ron’s career was twofold. The first 22 years was spent with the JCPenney Company. There he had 10 store assignments and seven transfers in 22 years. He held many positions coming up in the ranks including operations manager. Not wanting to continue moving, he decided to leave JCPenney and purchase Walking Billboards Inc., which he operated for 20 years.
After selling Walking Billboards, he did business developments and partnerships. He also supported Grayce in her business over the years at GB & Company. He loved people and talked to everyone. Ron always made a point of saying he could count on his two hands the number of bad days he has at work. He had a passion for his work and was always up to the challenge.
Ron was a man of many interests, not wanting to get bored doing just nothing. He enjoyed traveling by Corvette with his wife to most of the states. Ron also loved his cabin up north and home in Rio Verde, Arizona, where he and wife, Grayce entertained family and friends. He enjoyed playing golf, tennis and cribbage, especially if there was a wager involved. Ron also collected Corvettes and was very knowledgeable on the earlier years. He was a long time member of the National Corvette Restoration Society. Ron also loved 50’s music and knew most of the songs and artists of that era. He loved making CD’s and giving them to family, friends and classmates.
Ron believed in giving back to the community and was involved in several communities with the chamber of commerce, The United Way, and heading up fundraising efforts in several JCPenney stores as well as serving on the United Way Board and chairing the personnel committee and family services committee. He also served as an officer in several Corvette clubs, was a long time Boy Scout fundraiser, and Boys and Girls Club Boards of Trustee member.
Ron also felt so blessed to have been born in the United States of America in this particular time frame. He never took anything for granted, especially our freedoms, and he always felt people should never forget their humble beginnings and never rise to think that they were ever better than anyone else. These were his maxims that he tried to live up to each day, along with playing fair,  always playing to win and never giving up. He always hoped he could make a small difference in his time on earth. He believed in P.M.A. – positive mental attitude.
He is preceded in death by his son, David Mark; and parents, Donald and Kathryn Berg.
He is survived by his wife, Grayce; daughter, Kimberly (Frank Mazzacano); granddaughter, Paige Clair Hoghaug; and sister, Merridee Matson.

Harold’s first job was with the St. Paul Housing Authority as a cartographer, which developed into a passion for selling and securing financing for commercial and residential housing projects throughout Minnesota. After working for several companies in St. Cloud, he started his own housing consulting business. The company focused on helping cities in greater Minnesota to build much needed affordable and market-rate apartments, often utilizing tax increment financing. He was skilled at building relationships, managing projects from start to finish and adapting as needed to get the job done. His adaptability was important later in life when he learned to cope with Parkinson’s Disease and continue to live life to the fullest.
Harold was very active in Sauk Rapids and was selected the Sauk Rapids Citizen of the Year in 1998; volunteered to write the first City of Sauk Rapids Comprehensive Plan 1984-89; chairman of the Sauk Rapids Planning Commission 1986-91, served on the Sauk Rapids City Council 1998-2000; Sauk Rapids Mayor 2000-04 and on the St. Cloud Metropolitan Transit Commission 2000-04. After retiring, Harold started Engine Company No. 2 for the retired firefighters to continue to support each other and the community. The group’s first project was to find, purchase and restore Sauk Rapids’ first fire truck from 1920.
Harold was an active member of Sacred Heart Church where he served on the parish council and as president of the Home and School Association; served on the St. Cloud Cathedral High School Board of Trustees 1986-91, chair-1988; St. Cloud Cathedral Athletic Association President and Board Member and St. Cloud State University Alumni Board of Directors.
Harold had a tenacity to get things done and was instrumental in bringing a second sheet of ice for hockey to the St. Cloud Metro area in Sauk Rapids in 1985. As fundraising chair, he secured Glen Sonmor, Coach of the Minnesota North Stars, as the honorary fundraising chairman. Fundraising began in 1981 and ground was broken on the building in 1984 after meeting the fundraising goal of $300,000, with its first full season of operation in 1985.
Harold’s volunteer and community involvement were driven by his great love of his family. He stepped up when asked and initiated when he saw a need. He had a tireless work ethic, endless positive attitude and was an incredible role model to his children. He was always there to cheer them on and continued that with his grandchildren, attending as many of their activities as he could.
Harold enjoyed boating, fishing, biking, camping and working around the house. He was a skilled handyman and was known for his meticulously clean garage and cars. He had an amazing memory to the end and despite his struggle to communicate due to his illness, was the source of detailed memories. He enjoyed spending time with the grandkids including picnics at the park, “Fun Fridays” with his grandsons, and making them his special French toast. In concern for the health of community members, Mass of Christian Burial will be private at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sartell and burial will be at the parish cemetery. A celebration of life will be at a future date when it is safe to gather again. Arrangements have been entrusted to Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, Sauk Rapids.
Evelyn Faye Curfman was born Aug. 14, 1956,  in Fosston to Glenn and Mary (Baustian) Curfman. She was raised on a farm by Lengby, with her three brothers and four sisters. She attended school in Fosston. After the passing of her father Glenn, her mother Mary married Everett Motl and she lived in Newfolden for a brief time. Evie returned to Fosston and graduated high school in 1974. She met the love of her life, Maurus Karboviak, as he would come in for coffee at The Little Cafe, which her mother and step father owned, and where she worked, next door to the Fosston Light Plant where he worked. After graduation, she moved to Thief River Falls where she worked as a waitress at Woolworth’s lunch counter. Evie returned to Fosston in 1975, and married Maurus June 7, 1975, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She then returned to waitressing and cooking at the Little Cafe. In 1976, they moved to Finley, North Dakota, when Maurus accepted a job as a lineman with Sheyenne Valley Electric Cooperative. In the summer of 1976, Evelyn worked for Northern Pipeline Co., gluing pipe together for Dakota rural water users in Griggs and Steele county areas. In 1977, their son Richard was born and Evelyn became a stay at home mom. In 1981, their daughter Jacquelyn was born, and she remained a stay at home mother until the children were in school. During her time at home, she occasionally took up babysitting other children and was known for decorating many wedding, anniversary, retirement, and birthday cakes. She then took a job as a teacher’s aide with Finley-Sharon School and affectionately became known as “Mrs. K”, a title she truly cherished while working with children. Although she only had two children herself, she considered each of the school children one of her own. Evie worked as an aide for 25 years, retiring in 2015 due to failing health. She also volunteered at St. Olaf’s Catholic Church teaching confirmation classes. Other volunteer activities included being a first responder for Finley Ambulance.  Upon Maurus’ retirement from Nodak Electric Co-op in 2016, they moved to Sauk Rapids to be closer to their two grandchildren. She truly enjoyed attending the many concerts, plays and hockey games that Emma and Alex participated in.  Never one to sit still, she began volunteering at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home, praying the rosary with the residents in the memory care unit until COVID-19 ceased that activity. Always a talented craft-loving person, she began colored pencil coloring pictures to share with all the residents at Good Shepherd. She had just recently completed this project. Evie never wanted to run any of Maurus’ saws, but she helped with hand sanding and varnishing hundreds of prayer crosses she and Maurus made over the years. This was one of her most cherished hobbies.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Maurus of Sauk Rapids; son, Rick and daughter, Jackie (Filip) Johnson; grandchildren, Emma and Alex Johnson, all of Sauk Rapids; sisters, Alice Wander of Detroit Lakes, Theresa (Marvin) Star of Green River, Wyoming, Sharol, (Rick) Mason of Verndale; brothers, Tim (Donna) Curfman of Alexandria and Paul (Deb Pfiefer-Curfman) Curfman of Fosston; sister in law, Jan Curfman of Prescott, Arizona; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter in law, Jenny (Rettig) Karboviak; brother Theodore “Ted” Curfman; sister, Audrey (Rick) Simmons; brother in law, Vernon “Beans” Wander and nephew, Dustin Simmons.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the workers on the Telemetry floor at CentraCare. Evie felt truly blessed to be in the care of so many wonderful, caring, and compassionate workers. She considered them the best, especially during this COVID-19 crisis.
